Rhodia Fibres, owned by the Solvay Group, has launched the very first biodegradable yarn in the world, which was integrated in the summer 2014/15 collection of Brazilian designer Ronaldo Fraga that was presented at the recently concluded 37th edition of the Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW).

The yarn, known as 'Amnio Soul Echo', is made from 50 percent of polyamide and disintegrates into landfills in just over a year, states a Rhodia press release.

The Amnio yarn, which includes polyamide 6.6 microfibres made exclusively from recycled raw materials, has been created by enhancing its formulation which allows clothes made from the yarn decompose quickly after being discarded into the landfill.

Francisco Ferraroli, president of Global Business Areas in Fibres of Solvay Group, said that the biodegradable yarn is Rhodia's commitment towards the planet as well as the global textile industry.

Polyamide fibre, on an average, takes decades to decompose, but the biodegradable yarn has been created in such a manner that the decomposition of the fabric would take less than three years, which is a huge development for the textile industry, and a significant contribution for the future generations, he added.

Ronaldo Fraga, who incorporated the Rhodia biodegradable yarn in his creations, said the Amnio Soul Echo yarn is the beginning of a revolution of materials for garments of the 21st century.

The biodegradable yarn provides several benefits for its users such as soft fabrics, extreme comfort, breathability, moisture absorbing, easy-care, and easily-washable, he added.
